We need to dramatically increase pay for our most effective teachers
This will need to include implementing an intentional process to evaluate top teachers who are moving the needle for student growth.
The Problem:
High-performing educators, which directly relate to school and student success, are undervalued in Indiana. We need to retain our best teachers, including those who teacher hard-to-staff positions, and ensure they receive a dramatic increase in salary.
The Solution:
Provide long-term incentives for highly effective teachers to remain in Indiana’s public schools, especially in hard-to-staff schools or high-need subjects. This should include making sure teachers have opportunities for advancement and growth outside the classroom.

What’s the data say?
The literal cost of not retaining a teacher is higher than you might expect. It costs an average of $11,860 to replace an educator in a small sized school district (Small= less than 10,000 students).
To put this into statewide perspective, if the entire state of Indiana was one small sized school district, the estimated cost of our state’s teacher turnover of 15,877 educators in 2023 would be $188,301,220.
